In short: The most common cabin bag size is 55 × 40 × 23 cm (21.7 × 15.7 × 9.1 in) at Lufthansa, Eurowings, Condor, Swiss and Turkish. Stricter limits apply at Ryanair Priority with 55 × 40 × 20 cm, Qatar Airways with 50 × 37 × 25 cm, and Emirates with just 7 kg (15.4 lb). All seven camera backpacks and slings in the compagnon Performance and Heritage Line stay below 55 × 40 × 23 cm when empty. As a small carry-on item (personal item) under the seat, the Element sling 7L 2.0 and the Element sling 12L are the best choices.
Last updated: 27 October 2026. Airlines change their rules very often (Condor, for example, only on 1 May 2026). Check size and weight with your airline before you fly. All dimensions are outer dimensions including handles, pockets and wheels.
Carry-on rules of the major airlines
Carry-on, cabin bag and hand luggage mean the same thing in this guide. The table shows, per airline, the large cabin bag (cabin suitcase, trolley or backpack for the overhead bin) and the small carry-on item, also called a personal item, that must fit under the seat in front of you. On basic fares, often only the personal item is free.

Models and the gear that fits them
The gear details come from the product pages. They are guidelines and vary with camera body, lens and laptop.

Element backpack 30L 2.0
51×30×20 cm · approx. 2 kg · Performance Line
Fits: several camera bodies (e.g. Nikon Z8, Sony A7 IV, Fujifilm GFX100 II), lenses up to 50 cm long, a 70–200 mm f/2.8 lying across with side access, laptop up to 16″, tablet up to 13″, drone kit.
Ideal for: (semi-)professional travel and outdoor photographers with a telephoto lens and laptop. On trips, the roll-top is very handy as flexible extra space, for a jacket for example. For easy stowing on board, we recommend keeping it as empty as possible.

Leather and canvas add more dead weight, but thanks to its tasteful look the backpack is only very rarely recognised as a camera backpack and is therefore not explicitly weighed. Still, keep the total backpack weight in mind: with an 8 kg limit, about 5.4 kg remain for the contents.

Recommendations by gear and flying style
- One camera body with two to three lenses, just the essentials (minimalist): Element sling 7L 2.0. It fits everywhere and is ideal as a second bag next to your suitcase.
- One camera body, two to three lenses, drone (travel and nature photographer): Element 20L or Adapt 25L. Both are well below the limits for weight and size.
- Two camera bodies, 24–70 and 70–200 mm, laptop (semi-pro): Element 30L, supplemented if needed by the Element sling 12L or 7L as a personal item. Check size and weight on Qatar, Emirates and low-cost airlines.
- Medium format or event gear with a stylish, discreet look: backpack Gen III. Keep the total weight in mind and add a sling as a second bag if needed.
- Low-cost only, with a personal item (small carry-on item): Element sling 7L, Element sling 12L or little backpack. All meet the 40 × 30 × 20 cm limit.
Five tips for flying with camera gear
- Camera and lenses always in the cabin. Checked backpacks are more likely to get lost or damaged.
- Batteries and power banks in carry-on only. The Lufthansa Group tightened its rules on this on 15 January 2026. Read up before you fly.
- Take off the hip belt. On the Element backpacks the belt is removable. It then fits inside the backpack or suitcase.
- Do not overfill the roll-top. An overfilled backpack is less likely to pass the sizer at the gate.
- Use the trolley strap. Element 2.0, Adapt 2.0 and the Element slings slide onto a rolling suitcase. That takes the load off your back at the airport.
Frequently asked questions
Which camera backpack fits as carry-on on Ryanair?
With Priority, 55 × 40 × 20 cm is allowed. Element 20L, Adapt 25L and Element 30L fit (depth 20 cm; fully packed it is tight but fits). Without Priority only 40 × 30 × 20 cm under the seat applies: Element sling 7L, Element sling 12L and little backpack fit.
Does a camera backpack count as a personal item (small carry-on item)?
Only if it fits under the seat. For 40 × 30 × 15 cm (Lufthansa, Condor, British Airways) the Element sling 7L 2.0 at 22 × 27 × 11 cm fits safely. The Element sling 12L (17 cm deep) and the little backpack (16 cm deep) are just above.
How heavy can my camera gear be in carry-on?
Usually 8 kg at Lufthansa, Eurowings, Condor, Swiss and Turkish, 10 kg at Ryanair Priority and Wizz Air Priority, 7 kg at Emirates and Qatar. The empty weight of the backpack counts too.
Can I keep the hip belt on in the aircraft?
You can remove it and stow it separately. On Element backpacks it is removable. The belt is less practical at the airport but very comfortable for hikes at your destination. If the hip belt is carried separately in a suitcase or bag, the outer dimensions of the backpacks shrink once more.
Are carry-on sizes actually checked?
In spot checks, mostly at the gate on low-cost airlines. If the bag does not fit, checking it in costs 45 to 75 euros or more, depending on the airline. The outer look of compagnon backpacks and bags does not suggest camera gear, so weight and packed size attract less attention.
Sources and notes
The airline data is based on compilations last checked in August 2026 (Lufthansa, Eurowings, Ryanair, easyJet) and on other comparison sites for 2026. Official airline information always takes precedence. For binding information about your trip, always ask the operating airline. Inch and pound values are converted from the metric figures and rounded.
